Yes - it just takes a lot of hardware power. Typical transcoding CPU load will require at least a decent quad core CPU and may peg even that. To get consistent performance you want a dual quad core setup. Bandwidth can also be a factor, not to mention Hard drive load and transfer rates.

There is plenty that has been written on the topic already. Use search.

It is automatic?

I think my setup is sufficient:

  Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Architecture: 64bit
RAM: 16GB
CPU: Intel Xeon L3426 1.86Ghz + IPMI
HDD: 2x 2TB HW RAID 1
Bandwidth: 1Gbps

You may need to input transcoding parameters depending on the file format you use. O have a lot of 1080i wtv files that work fine. I've also done blue ray, mp4 and flash files but it's been a while since I did all the research and debugging on it. You can get it all to work but it does take a bit of effort. One of the keys is to use a recent release of the ffmpeg file from the ffmpeg site as the newer releases seem to work better than what you get from Subsonic.

Then you need to make sure that the file type you want to use is defined in the Settings for video and you get a transcoding string that works.

As stated, I've already submitted many posts on the topic and everything you need to do should already be here in the forums somewhere. I've been pretty busy building and deploying some new servers on my network and haven't gotten around to looking at 4.9 in detail yet, but I hope to revisit all this with a 4.9 install in a few weeks. If you can't find what you need or get it working I should be able to take a closer look in a couple weeks.
