200+GB Users. What Hardware and OS?

OK. I know we have quite a few subsonic users with music collections over 200GB.

I tried to load a large amount of music on one of my old laptops and it pretty much laughed at me when I tried to open the home page.

Can you list out how many GBs of music you have along with your hardware setup and OS? I am thinking about building another PC for around $300 but am worried it might not be able to support a large amount of music.

it would be around 300
amd athlon 64 ( am2 ) 2,6 GHZ
1 or 2 GB DDR
i think a single 500 GB is more price / size value
and i think,.. if you have some stuff lying around ( case / psu / cd drive / stuff like that ) that you can easy make a system with 300 that would be powerfull enough

Humm, I have mine running on a P4 2.8 old laptop.. maybe I will be OK.

im running on Freenas ( very light weight )
on a p3, with 1 GHZ cpu
2 X 250 GB hdd's
512 Sdram

streaming works well, with subsonic
but creating index, takes ages

so im gonna upgrade that peace of sh*t

thing about intel dual core
2GB DDR2
500 GB X 4 in RAID1
and a 1000Mbit network card
2GB flashcard to IDE for the freenas os

Jon, what's the exact problem you're facing? There are a few reasons why the opening of the start page could take longer than expected, such as very large cover art... .

flacflac what would happen is that the left frame would try to load forever and never come up. This was on a P4 1.6 and I was trying to load all 400GB (130,000 songs) of my music.

What I am really curious about is how subsonic performs with larger music collections and what type of hardware is being used. Things like how long left side takes to load when you open a new session.

If anyone has a larger library and wants to PM me a temporary ID to access their system to see how things perform I would be very appreciative.

I have a lot of friends that use subsonic with me and I am concerned if I try to load all the music again it will make it unusable, or at least so slow that it will be hard to use.

My "left side" loads very quick at >500GB of music files. I think the reason for this is the way how you organize your music folders.

For me its:

Music
>>Artists
>>>>A
>>>>B
>>>>C
>>>>D
>>>>>Dylan, Bob
>>>>>>>Blood On The Tracks (Year)
>>>>E
>>Various
>>>>Album (Year)


This way I end up with just the main folders on the left side, the individual artists or even the ABC-lettering is not present. You can get there by browsing or by using the search. I prefer this over jamming the network with unnecessary data. I am pretty sure you'd experience a vast improvement in speed if you re-organize your files. Anyone back me up on this?!

Kapz do you follow the standard Artist/Album/Track convention or have you done something similar to flacflac?

It took me some time with the help of an awesome (and highly flexible) program called "The Godfather" to clean my library. I don't think the developer is supporting it anymore since I have been using v0.71b2 for years. I modify subsonic's code to remove the "All Folders" from the category drop down (see link) because the initial load would take over a minute (hint sindre).

Single Songs: Artist\Artist - Title.mp3

Running on Ubuntu 9.04 VM on XenServer 5.0 Hypervisor.
Assigned one Xeon 2.4GHz core, 512MB Ram, 8GB vDisk
CIFS share mounted against a Windows server

Tomcat 5.5 and sun-java6 serving Subsonic.

Was running on WinXP, P4/3GHZ earlier, worked nice, but gave slow download speeds.

Now and then, the album list updates like a flash, and I don't bother subfoldering the albums by alphabet either.

I am running mine across 2 1.8 gHz servers, both running Ubuntu Server 8.10, tomcat 5.5, subsonic 3.7. Runs fairly well, with the exception of having to ensure your music is on the same server as the subsonic. Reason, I have found it helps a lot with the album art. I have recently upgraded my switch to gigabit, and that helps streaming across the servers immensely.

I have a total of 2.2 TB available.
