Sync Music Playback

Postby Quickdood » Sun Oct 31, 2010 5:02 pm

Ok, imagine this. You have computers in several rooms all with individual speakers. You want to rock out hard and fill the house with music, yet you dont want to run around like a mad man trying to sync them all with each other. Enter the music sync feature.

As we know when others are playing music on one's server or when you are playing music there is a notifications on the right side of the screen detailing what is being played. Now imagine clicking on that notification and having the option to sync with what is being played. Basically you will be listening to what another person or computer is listening to and be exactly at the same point in the song.

So now in the above situation I would be abe able to sync my music playback so all computers are playing the same thing at the same time. On top of that, my friends and I can listen to the same stuff at the same time and I could pretty much make a live music experience for my friends. And for those sentimental guys you and your girlfriend could listen to the same thing, ah how sweet. :)

And as far as the coding aspect goes, you could have the player send information to the sever when a change is made rather than all the time. So, if I am listen to a song and someone is listening with me, my player will only notify the server where I am a few times. Once when someone elects to listen with me, then after that whenever I change songs, pause songs, or do anything that would cause song playback to deviate from a regular play. I know nothing about coding but that would be a clever way to do it.

::TLDR:: Syncing several computers to the same time in music playback would be cool through Subsonic

There's a java program called syncboss which does this brilliantly. I used it for a party I had last summer. I had 2 computers connected via ethernet and one via wifi and all 3 played in perfect sync all night.

Syncboss is open source:

Incorporating this functionality into Subsonic would be fantastic. Perhaps through a plugin?

Going to bump this, as it's sadly been the most productive thread here.

Is there any possibility of somebody with the know-how implementing this, or pointing in the direction where one could work out how to implement it? Even an alternative for SS would do, simply at a point where in-sync players would be a big deal with current setup.

+1

iTunes can AirPlay to multiple AirPorts which has been handy at my house but a cross platform solution built into Subsonic would be really nice.

I think this is an interesting post, why? In a way what you are asking is for ss to be the (old radio) transmitter and all clients of your ss server would become (old radio) receivers. Am I wrong?
You sent out your music and all receivers would listen to that.... But isn't that's called (internet) radio transmission? Listeners just have to tune in to your station and listen to what your server is serving by the push of a button.

But you are thinking from within your own (private) network, and I think ss is just something else. You set-up a huge database of music, and friends/family/clients are free to use it to listen to what they find in that database. The ss server gets some feedback from your clients (as you wrote at the right side of your screen), you can see what they are playing from your server.
That's called freedom of choice, you are not running a radio station.

But if you want. You can use ss to play music and with a little fantasy you just sent the music to a fixed port. Write a little html wich contains a player and your music stream (set up a small webserver). If you now want to hear the music in your entire (private) network just goto the html page.

In my opinion ss is more like music on demand (with the freedom of choice) the other thing is internet radio, inbetween is a grey area (demanding and making downloadable and exchangable playlists so everyone can enjoy what you like just by accepting your playlist).

Before you think wrong, I did 3 years of internet radio, had a great crowd of listeners (to my stream on my website), but had to move into the other side.... let people make up their own minds, I don't care what they wanna listen to, as long it's in my collection. Around that I build my own chatbox and stuff..... And than I found this ss system, wich can do most of what I always did or tried to do.

And finally, sync is a word used for syncing robots and machines, I hope I will never live to see the day people are in sync. Out of sync is the future
