Help with recently inconsistent Subsonic

Postby Jetryckx » Mon May 26, 2014 8:47 pm

Problem Description:
So, I've been using subsonic for nearly a year now (it will be a year in June so I'll need to grab another year's subscription) and I've loved it. Allow my fiancee, little brother, and my closest friends access to my server so they can listen to what I'm listening either on a browser or their mobile devices has been awesome. However, for about the last week and a half, my subsonic server has been very inconsistent. It will work for about 5 minutes, then not work for another 10 minutes, then it will work again for 10 minutes, then not work again for 5 minutes. It is difficult to find a pattern. I wish I could restart the physical server itself, that usually solved any problems I had over the past year (which was very rare) but I am actually abroad and will not be back in a few days. I was wondering what was going on and if there was anything I could do remotely. Again, it works on all devices (Mac's, PC, Android tablets/phone, iPhones, iPad's) but it is just very inconsistent. I've scanned around the forums for the past hour or so and I haven't found anyone having the same problem as I have, so I'm making a note

Troubleshooting steps:
I've tried scanning the media folders, that fixed problems I had before. I've unchecked automatic port forwarding and rechecked it. I am not sure what else I can do remotely.

Playback application and version:
Mac's (chrome or firefox), PC (Chrome or firefox), Android tablets/phone (subsonic app), iPhones (iSub), iPad's (iSub)

Subsonic version:
4.9 (build 3819) – January 23, 2014

Server version:
jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_65, Mac OS X (113.8 MB / 146.1 MB)

Hardware Platform:
The server runs on an older macbook pro, circa 2007.

Devices that access the server -->
2 Macs both on Mavericks (10.9.3, my primary is a retina macbook pro, 2012). 1 PC running windows 8 (not sure more detail than that). 2 iPhone 5S's, 1 iPhone 5, 1 Samsung Galaxy S3, one Samsung Galaxy S5, 1 Nexus 7 (not used all the same time, used sporadically)

Java Memory Limit:
Not sure where to find this, is it this?
jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_65, Mac OS X (113.8 MB / 146.1 MB)

Problem Filename:
No specific files having problem. It is mostly my connection on the server. It's been inconsistent in terms of functionality.

Output from ffmpeg:
Not sure how to do this in Mac OSX

Also, update... when the server isn't working on my iPhone, and I search for a song, it says...

"Error
There was an error completing the search.
Error: The request timed out"

On my laptop using chrome, the main screen has an unhappy face saying
"The operation timed out."

The internet I'm using is working because all other websites work on both devices.

Most of the issues I've had with poor server response has been due with memory issues, only recently have increased RAM in the settings panel to 512Mb in the hope it will free things up a bit. Maybe try that if you have multiple users?

Thanks lovebags! I'll give that a try. I haven't seen where in the settings that option is located, but that would make sense.

I just looked through every settings tab twice (and I have previously when I was having this issue last week) and I could not find it. Is there another place where I can increase the RAM in the settings? The computer I'm using has 6 GB of RAM.

This is info on how to do it with a Windows install http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3939, on a Mac it's more fiddly and you need to follow the instructions here http://www.subsonic.org/pages/installation.jsp#mac

Thanks for the tips! I gave it a whirl and I couldn't find where I could adjust the memory being used. I opened up the plist file w/ both xcode and text-edit and nothing stuck out obviously in terms of changing the memory that subsonic was using... I'm attaching two screen shots of what I'm looking at. Thanks again for all the help!

In text editor it looks like it's this code that needs adjusting.

<key>VMOptions</key>
<string>-Xmx100m</string>

I just found more info in the thread about the Mac settings half way down...

So clutch. I think that did the trick. I increased the Xmx100m to Xmx256m. I just picked something that was more than double I suppose and 256 felt good. It took a couple of restarts and a day or two, but it seems to be much more consistent. I have done a ton of restarts and tweaks before then, and adjusting that line w/ Xmx seemed to be the thing that really made the difference.

Thanks so much Lovebags, I owe ya a beer or whatever beverage is of your choice, haha
