Subsonic 80-100% CPU Usage

Postby irishgond » Fri Jun 13, 2014 3:58 pm

So due to a hardware failure on my server I setup Subsonic on a different PC. As soon as I start the subsonic-service.exe it goes to 80-100% cpu usage and stays there. This was with no configuration at all and continues to do it even with most everything now configured. I thought it would stop after a bit but it does not (thought maybe after a media scan it would go down).

I do have Java 1.7 but I thought that issue was resolved , also the newest release version of Subsonic.

Win7 Enterprise, 8GB ram i5 2520 cpu

Anyone? The server that died was an old pos running WinXP and never had this issue.

Got any video in the library? If so, disable the video folder and see if it settles down.

If memory serves I think ffmpeg does some pre-processing of video files when it's first installed. It should settle down, but it probably depends on the size of your library.

Glad that sorted it. I don't remember all the technical explanations but it has something to do with ffmpeg reading/processing video file headers. You've got plenty of CPU for most media. you might find it a challenge when you get into HD video. Probably one stream would be OK, any more and you'll challenge the CPU. Other than that it should hardly show any load with music.

If you are into HD video, I suggest reformatting it into flv so you don't need to transcode it on the fly. Then you bottleneck is only your upload bandwidth.

So the issue is back. Not sure what happened but the subsonic process needed restarted becaause I could not connect to the server. Once restarted the cpu spiked to 80% plus for over 4hrs, so I killed the process. I do not use Subsonic for movie streaming, just to stream music and family and friends to download music and movies from me. Not sure why it keeps maxing the cpu...?

How big is your library?

It's most likely the HD Video files that are processing with ffmpeg that pre-reads the headers. It should settle down once all the files are scanned.

You can open task manager, click on the Performance tab, then at the bottom open Resource Monitor.

Then click on the CPU tab.

Look at the Processes and Services sections. click on the CPU headers in each section to sort by highest useage to see what's eating the CPU cycles. If it's ffmpeg, then that's what's going on. Once your library has completeted a full scan, things should settle down. How long depends on the mix of musoc to video and hard drive speed, but I'd give it a day or 2.

If that doesn't do it - I'm out of ideas.

I did this previously...no ffmpeg at all...it's the subsonic-service.exe that's eating up the CPU

Has the initial media scan completed?

That's the thing...Subsonic...Madsonic...both "service" goes from 40-80% CPU and stays there or drops then goes up....without even having setting anything up...no configuration at all....just the install and the service starting. I have no media folders or anything setup.

On a side note...I had it running fine on a Win 7 Pro VM that is on the same laptop that Subsonic keeps having issues. I just can't get Subsonic to see the hard drive on the host laptop...even though the VM has the drive mapped (bridged NIC in the VM)

If you set up in a VM you should use UNC shares to the folders rather than mapped drive.

Yes, I was using the UNC name...but dammit...had one wrong letter lol...fixed and running on the VM now. So that's good for now as that is how I wanted it in the first place. I still do not know why I was having the issue on the physical laptop.

Now...I'm working making my Raspberry Pi a dedicated Subsonic sever...first time setting this up... Thanks for all the help GJ51!!!!

Happy to hear you have it working.

The problem with the physical install certainly is a mystery. I also have a Pi sitting on one of my desks somewhere down in the lab that I wanted to put Subsoncic on. One of these days...

I think there are instructions on the forum somewhere, but for me it's still one of my many bucket list projects lol. Let me know how that goes for you.
