Subsonic installation has been shown repeatedly to be a bit tricky on these devices. At the prices they charge for these things I still can't understand why anyone would opt for one of these as opposed to just building a homeserver with more storage capacity and flexibility at a far lower price point.

Based on the last reply I'm not sure whether the thread is in fact the right place to have posted my support request? This thread seems to have turned into musings about the relative merits of a NAS...

My earlier post reported that I couldn't install the package using your instructions on http://www.eg-blog.de. I get "Failed to install the package. Error:Cannot Start Subsonic during install". This happens irrespective of whether the box "Run after Installation" is ticked or not.

I found out that I could manually install the subsonic package (file from gigon's dropbox Subsonic4.8-033.spk). Now the package center gives me the option to Run or Uninstall - if I choose Run, it pops up the error message: "Failed to run the package service". What am I doing wrong?

I want to apologize for occasionally raining on this parade, but I think it's only fair to anyone reading these pages that may be thinking of using a NAS to run Subsonic that they should know what they are up against. Many NAS systems are fine products and although somewhat overpriced are very good products for users who want minimal setup and a great oob experience for network storage - the function that they are designed for.

Although, as seen by this thread, it is possible to accomplish, it is not an easy task and can be a real pain. The whole concept is a contradiction if you actually give it some thought. I know, deep thinking isn't very common these days, but let's give it a try. Who would buy an overpriced NAS rather than just building a far more powerful, flexible and cost effective server for half the price? Obviously someone who doesn't want the hassle of doing the build and the setup. Yet, now that same user wants to get Subsonic running on a NAS that isn't really designed to do that and will consume power that the NAS designers never envisioned for the box.

My suggestion: Spend another $35 for a Rasberry Pi and just have it access the music stored on the overpriced NAS. That way you can screw up the Pi as often as you like without messing up the overpriced NAS.

-OR-

You could so what I just did. I'm running out of server space and always need more storage. So I decided to build a new server that I will use to consolidate and run all my Subsonic sites on. I'm committed to Madsonic for everyday use, but I also like to test other forks and keep a current Subsonic site up for reference. That way I can test new features and experiment with transcodings and things like HTML5, without messing up my primary site.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1116953803

I just ordered one of these. Dual quad core Xeons running at 2.5GHz with 16GB ram an 4 15k rpm 73GB hard drives for a total of $210 with shipping. Add $50 for WHS 2011 and for $260 TOTAL I'll have a Subsonic server that can run circles around any NAS unit and it has 4 3.5" hard drive bays for storage. I'll probably set up 3 virtual machines on the box so I can run 4 instances of Subsonic on the same box, each with 4gb of ram. The box comes with dual NIC's built in, so I can access media stored on my storage array fast enough that it won't be a factor for play back.

The 4 73GB hard drives were kind of a bonus and I might use them as boot drives on other systems and leave one for boot on this system and add 3 high capacity drives for more storage space. I'll wait till the unit arrives next Friday to figure out which way to go. I doubt that these are set up in RAID, but if they are I may just leave them that way as it would be probably faster than an SSD if these 4 at 15k SAS were in RAID.

And the advantage to buying a NAS is ... ???

Again - I do appreciate the plug and play aspect of a high quality NAS for someone who doesn't want to do their own setup and get into installing and configuring and Operating System, but if that is why you would buy a NAS, why would you want to get into the challenge of installing Subsonic on the box. In my experience, setting up Subsonic can be more of a challenge than installing an OS. But, then again, I've been installing OS's for over 30 years, so maybe I'm not the right benchmark on this issue.

Either way, I've outlined two affordable options that make more sense than hacking the NAS.

I may start working on setting up Subsonic on my Rasberry Pi this week as well. I'm not a Linux guy, but if I get it running I'll try to get a post up.

No you don't - you're just trolling
GJ51 wrote: who would buy an overpriced NAS rather than just building a far more powerful, flexible and cost effective server for half the price?

Someone who doesn't wan't a half-arsed PC or (lol...) corporate frigde rackmount server (sorry...still laughing...) in a big noisy ugly case - it's a form factor thing.

GJ51 wrote:to get Subsonic running on a NAS that isn't really designed to do that and will consume power that the NAS designers never envisioned

Wrong - it works fine on most NAS's I've had over the last 8 years (Qnap & Netgear)

....So please, let's get back to this thread and the the OP see if he can answer the question I posted

GJ51 wrote:two affordable options that make more sense than hacking the NAS

(still laughing..) Maybe you can post this somewhere else for people who want living room rackmount servers perhaps

Best of luck solving your problem.

Your welcome to logon as a guest on any of my servers in the meantime - they are still working.

Trolling is an Internet slang term used to describe any Internet user behavior that is meant to intentionally anger or frustrate someone else. It is often associated with online discussions where users are subjected to offensive or superfluous posts and messages in order to provoke a response.

http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/trolling

I hardly think that a post that attempts to warn others of the challenges they face should they so choose to engage in this strategy qualifies.

I have no servers, racks, routers, switches, or NAS devices in my living room. Anyone serious about home networking puts a bit of thought and planning into what they're doing and finds a convenient central location to locate this equipment in a cool, out of the way location (like a basement or utility closet, if well ventilated) and then just takes the time to install uncluttered CAT 6 outlets in convenient locations so that there are no excess wires hanging out of place in the family room, living room, and any other locations that you want wired network access.

No offense taken - I would probably have a similar reaction if someone pointed out to me that my investment really didn't make much sense. Then again - not really as I'm a bit beyond that these days.

All said - I think any rational person should really think twice about messing up an expensive NAS device's OS or performance just to install Subsonic, when there are an incredible range of far more effective and affordable solutions.

Re: Subsonic Package for Synology NAS

Postby tripeX » Sun Nov 17, 2013 11:20 pm

I run into a weired install error.

I have User Home activated, I created a folder /Subsonic, /home/Subsonic, /homes/admin/Subsonic, /Public/Subsonic even a /homes/guest/Subsonic and gave them admin and guest full access.

On installation Subsonic askes if I want to restore old settings, I choose NO and start installation and the installation keeps spitting errors of no folder Subsonic found in Public folder. Rebooting the DS1812+ brings no cure for this error and I tried latest beta and stable version of Subsonic from eg-blog.de's Dropbox folders.

I'm on DMS 4.3 and the /public is not creatable since its reserved. And thhe standard public folder is not created anymore by DSM since 3.x I think.

Any ideas?

FYI - 4.9 works great on Synology assuming you have 4.8 installed first - I updated it manually though - download http://www.subsonic.org/pages/download2 ... one.tar.gz move subsonic-booter-jar-with-dependencies.jar
and subsonic.war to /usr/syno/synoman/webman/3rdparty/Subsonic check ownership and permissions (subsonic:users) restart! that's it.

If anyone needs help understanding how to do any of the above I'm not able to assist... sorry - no time at the moment! ;)

Thanks, boing. Works great.

Except... has anyone seen this error under Settings > Personal > Max bitrate?

Notice: Transcoders does not appear to be installed. Click Help button for more information.

I'm not sure what to do here. Is it looking for LAME and it can't be found?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/subsoni ... anscoding/

Download the 1.1 transcode pack and place the files in the transcode subdirectroy.

I don't use Linux but if memory serves ... I think it's under /var/subsonic

If you can't find the proper subdirectory search the forum I know it's posted here somewhere.

Almost all transcoding should now just use ffmpeg

You can also update ffmpeg directly from their site.

Hello,

I’ve installed and configured Subsonic on my ds214 play without any problem yesterday but I don’t find any media in my lybrary.
I’ve clicked several time on “Scan media folders now” yesterday about 11:00 pm but this morning I don’t see anything in my media list.
Tried to stop the service reboot the syno and start the service again.

Anybody has tried this out ?

Thanks,
jé’

After a look at the logs I've seen that there were a permission problem on /volume1/music and /volume1/mp3

I gave owner permissions (children included) for the subsonic user on the two directories but the log file semmes to say that there is no media to scan :/

[SOLVED]

I've solved my problem following this steps :
1 - Stop the subsonic service via DSM interface
2 - SSH with root privileges to the Synology
3 - rm -r /volume*/@appstore/Subsonic/dm
4 - restart subsonic service within the DSM interface

and now the log look like this and this look better :')
Code: Select all

Re: Subsonic Package for Synology NAS

Postby Dubhead » Sun Aug 24, 2014 11:05 pm

j79 or others,
I was having similar problems trying to get Subsonic to recognize the /volume1/Music/MP3 media location for my music and tried your suggestion in the fix but I do not even have a "dm" folder in my /volume1/@appstore/Subsonic location :?:
I am having a very hard time to get Subsonic to recognize this location for my media and have tried many combinations of paths to this to see if they would work to no avail. It seems that it only likes forward slashes (like Unix) for paths. Here are some I tried:

//192.168.1.231/volume1/Music/MP3
//DISKSTATION/volume1/Music/MP3
//volume1/Music/MP3
/Music/MP3

I am not having any luck with this and am frustrated by this simple issue. I have a user in Subsonic set up with the same name and password as my admin user on the Synology DS1813+ that I am running Subsonic on. I have the permissions set to allow read/write on all files in that path for this user as well. Something else I am missing here obviously. Any insights on this would be appreciated. This was not an issue with my other NAS servers (Netgear).
