I have over 44,898 songs loaded and I build genre categories of about 200, there are only 24 hours in a day, if each song were 5 minutes....that's only 288 songs.
I made one giant playlist of all my favorite songs/albums and sync that entire playlist to an old(er) Android phone with an SD card. This way, I have a portable music player to bring in the car or on a plane that gets automatically synced via Wi-Fi. I do any playlist maintenance via the web interface, so while I don't really listen to music that way, it needs to be responsive enough for me to make whatever changes are necessary.
That being said, I never thought about increasing the allocated RAM. My server has 8GB, so I'll try bumping up the limits and see if that helps out.
