Playlists in 4.8 - still a problem

Postby ggibby » Wed May 01, 2013 3:42 pm

For some reason, I thought this might be resolved when the release notes included:
"New: Re-import playlists if file timestamp has changed.
New: Make playlist folder setting visible again."

I found "Settings>General>Import Playlists from:"
and wonder what "will regularly import" means in the popup.
SS only showed lists I created during my brief flirtation with 4.7,
which have now been deleted.

I've restarted SS and rebooted the machine, still no list import from the directory by SS.
Clicking on 'Import playlist' works, but I won't do that every time I update a list -
it will take longer to add them to SS than it did to create them.

What am I missing (besides 4.6)?

Upgraded from 4.6 to 4.8 after seeing it in the patch notes as well, I haven't found any way of monitoring a directory for playlists either. Please give us the ability to push playlists to subsonic via files again, I'm missing out on all the bugfixes since 4.6 is the last version that's not useless to me. :(

Overnight, SS found all the playlists in the designated folder which is good,
but did not update lists that I had imported, then updated at the source.

When I import the updated list, SS just creates a second instance of the same name in the list.

And less important but still annoying, the playlist names are sorted by import order, not alphabetically.
*sigh*

The fix is pretty painless - just stop Subsonic and the service, and install 4.6.
Problem solved.

I'm still on 4.6 for the same reason.

Same here- using 4.6 due to playlists. As I stated in another post, Subsonic does not manage the location of the files, so how will it know to correct the playlist if an outside program moves/changes the file? 4.8 is a good step, but it's not quite there yet.

I keep two duplicate subsonic servers in sync with each other, including playlists and found that the 4.8 upgrade is great for that. I exported the playlists from one server (which is still on 4.7) then put into the c:/playlist folder. The playlists don't automatically show in 4.8 so I did a rescan and then they all showed up in the list. I have yet to check if any playlists change, how the auto-check and reimport works.

I came back after reading the 4.9 Feature/fix list,
which again indicated that the Playlist path would be visible,
and the interface promises to update automagically.

So I installed the latest stable version,
And update it does not.

Anybody else dealing with this?

yeah, not working for me either in 4.9 on osx 10.6.8. i'm new to subsonic and i can't get the system to read any playlists from the assigned folder. also, it seems that every time the subsonic scans my media, the playlists that i loaded manually lose their media connection and get reset to (0). this is a real bummer because i have over 500 playlists and loading them manually isn't practical. otherwise, i'm really happy with subsonic and would get the subscription. if i can't figure this out, i may try madsonic. it has this functionality, too. :(

ok, some joy. after posting yesterday, i clicked on the database cleanup function in settings. i then changed my media scanning from none to every three days at 3:00 am. this morning, i have playlists, lots of them! i will look at this more closely later... :D

:( playlists are empty again. i assume this is happening because subsonic is automatically rescanning media folders. i don't know why it doesn't automatically reimport the playlists after the rescan. i just manually clicked on clean database. i will check to see if this effects the automatic playlist import function and report back.

am i the only one seeing this behavior?

ok, i think i have it figured out. scanning the media breaks the link between the playlist and the songs. you end up with empty playlists. subsonic doesn't re-import the playlists after the automatic rescan. so the procedure for me is:

    • export playlist from itunes (there's a great script called "batch export playlists")
    • under the general settings, point subsonic to your exported itunes playlists for playlist import
    • under media folders settings, point subsonic to your itunes music folder for media scanning
    • set scan media folders to never
    • click on "scan media folders now"
this workaround requires you to delete all your playlists and reimport them later, if you want to add additional playlists.

I found a fix for updating playlist in 4.9. This may work for other versions.

The steps are for linux cli.

1. sudo service subsonic stop
2. sudo service subsonic start
3. log back in to subsonic

Hope this help others. :)
