[RESOLVED] Music not scanning on raspberry pi server

Postby harleyb » Tue Jan 27, 2015 5:38 pm

Hi all, I've had a good look around the forum but can't find anyone with a similar problem or any solutions so I'd really appreciate some help with this as I'm a bit of a beginner.

Problem Description: So I am running subsonic on a raspberry pi connected to an ntfs external hard drive with around 70GB of music on it. The server is running, port forwarding and my .subsonic.org domain are registering fine. The media folder is successfully found at /media/subsonicHDD but when I tell it to 'scan media folders now' it does not find any music, or occasionally it will scan a single file before stopping but I think this may just be a recycle bin file on the hard drive or something.

Troubleshooting Steps:
● All/most music is arranged in folders as artist/album/song and formats are mostly mp3
● Set permissions with
Code: Select all
sudo chmod 775 /media/subsonicHDD

● Checked hard drive is mounted properly
● Rebooted a few times
Playback Application and version:
● Attempting playback on a PC running windows 8.1 in the chrome web browser
● Also tried with an android mobile app
Subsonic Version: 5.1 (build 4311) – January 18, 2015
Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.8.0, Linux (39.4 MB / 62.4 MB)
Hardware Platform: Raspberry Pi B+
Log file lines since restarting server:
Code: Select all

Hi, I also have an Rpi and subsonic. I used have a problem similar to yours, with a portable HDD, when I upgraded my HDD to a desktop one, the issues disappeared. Dunno if this your case.

Also, my desktop HDD is ext4 formatted and I set my subsonic memory limit to "384" (I have an RPI model B). The subsonic memory limit can be found in "/etc/default/subsonic" (use this tutorial "http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3939")

No luck with increasing the memory unfortunately, and I don't have a desktop HDD to test that theory but the portable one is connected to a powered USB hub (also powering the Pi) and the music on it can be browsed in the Pi's file manager so that shouldn't be an issue right? I can try and get hold of a desktop HDD to try if you think this is probably the issue though?

I've also tried moving all the music into a 'music' folder on the HDD, but when I change the media folder path to /media/subsonicHDD/music in the settings it says folder not found.

Anything else I can try?

Will definitely try to get hold a desktop HDD just to discard that theory. I also used to have a portable HDD connected to a USB power Hub (http://plugable.com/products/usb2-hub-ag7), which also powered the pi, but mine is a model B.

But maybe before you try the HDD desktop solution... just "chown" the new folder for music "/media/subsonicHDD/music" and all sub-folders. Use "chown -R user:user /media/subsonicHDD/music". Where "user" is the name of the user assigned to subsonic.

I was able to borrow a desktop HDD from a friend and set that up but the same thing is happening, and I made sure to 'chown' and 'chmod' the new music folder but it still can't be found by subsonic.

Oh boy... I'm running out of ideas. Does the Desktop HDD is connected directly to the Pi? or is connected to the Hub?... Try connect the HDD directly to the Pi.

If that's not help, try to do a fresh install using this guide http://mj2p.co.uk/a-raspberry-pi-subsonic-jukebox-using-java-8/ but omit the steps of java Installation (Search for this line to start "Now we can set up the Jukebox mode so that you can plug your pi into your hi-fi and play music directly on the hardware") and use
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-jdk

to install java.

And be patient there is always light at the end of a rpi-tunel 8)

Ok I've found the issue, when I set it up I created a new user called subsonic and was running the server as this user. So now, I've changed the user back to 'pi' in "/etc/default/subsonic" and its working fine now. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Just in case anyone passing-by is having similar problems (new media not scanning), I found that updating the mp3 timestamps fixed the problem for me:

From the parent folder...

Code: Select all
find . -type f -exec touch {} \;
