stuck at square one

Postby rhosch » Tue Feb 17, 2015 4:40 am

Shouldn't be this hard, have searched forums and followed guides, but just can't figure out where I have gone wrong.

Installed latest version to a win xp box. Followed a setup guide. Also followed the portforwarding guide for my Asus rt-n66r router (merlin build firmware). There is a four port Ethernet hub between router and the subsonic server.

I can open the subsonic browser interface on the win XP box on which it is installed but can't get any further. Can't see it inside my LAN on localhost:4040. Can't see it from outside my LAN using either my IP:4040 or my @.subsonic.org vanity address. Port checkers and canyouseeme.org can't see either port 80 or 4040.

I have tried changing ports in both my router and the subsonic tray icon settings. No change. Tried doing the automatic port forwarding option. No change. Turned off router firewall. No change. Tried enabling the https and using 4443. No change.

Where am I going wrong? Port forwarding not working? Subsonic service not responding properly?

I have an sftp server running on the same box for some time with no problem. Have port forwarding for that, no problem there and the hub seems to be a non-issue. So it seems that my router can at least forward ports and to this specific box no less.

Any idea, please help. About to abandon subsonic and give something else a shot.

Consult your routers manual for proper forwarding and ensure Windows Firewall has an Exception for Subsonic.

Maybe it's a windows firewall thing... I'll look into that. Crossing my fingers. Can't imagine it being incorrect port coward settings as I have had no problem doing this for other services on the exact same box, and all settings look identical to multiple guides. But it does act that way... I'm thinking the subsonic service on the other end isn't/can't respond to external requests. So hoping the firewall proves the culprit, good thought. I'll post back either way after checking that out.

canyouseeme.org doesn't lie...service MUST be running (default 4040 is just fine), firewall MUST have Subsonic exception, 4040 MUST be forwarded/pinholed on the router, and then it MUST pass the canyouseeme.org test. THEN you're golden! (remember a static IP on the server, too). Cheers!

It was the firewall. Looks like subsonic and I make a good pair... subsonic isn't smart enough to configure firewall exceptions automatically whereas the other programs installed that needed port forwarding were, and I wasn't smart enough to realize I needed to check that and allow firewall holes manually whereas other members presumably are!

Port forwarding was set correctly. Didn't suspect firewall since it had never been an issue before

Thanks, now I have a few days left in the trial to see if I actually like it.
