I think that would be possibly by a (one-time) manual procedure (registering the Subsonic music service manually on the Play:3). It's not difficult, but requires some documentation. I'll provide a FAQ entry or similar for this later.

First off: This is AMAZING. I had been paying $50/year to MyMusicToMe which allowed my Subsonic library to be added as a service to Sonos. It was not only costly (and annoying to have to pay to listen to my own music) but buggy. This implementation works great and has been rock solid (and I finally have stuff like "Recently Added" to be able to play on Sonos.

Yes, I'd love to be able to access and share my Subsonic log-in details to other users or when away from home on different system. Can't wait for this to happen.

And yes, the previously addressed native streaming without transcoding to MP3 is also appreciated.

Thanks again for this wonderful upgrade!

This would be really fantastic since it would give me the possibility to bring all my music with me as long as i bring the Play3 and has an port80 internetconnection

Sindre, I've been waiting for something like this for so very long. I would love to help test.

I'm running subsonic on Windows 8. I have both a sonos connect and a play 5.

My main reasons for wanting this integration are 1) I have more than 50K song files and sonos starts behaving poorly when it has to tackle that large of a library (even though less than the stated 65K max). And my collection is only getting bigger. 2) Sonos does not allow you to export sonos playlists. For this reason I do not want to waste time creating playlists in sonos that require me to be married to their ecosystem. Much better to create, store and manipulate portable, agnostic playlists in subsonic. But it is annoying that I don't have access to these playlists in sonos, my primary means of listening to music at home.

I finally broke down recently and bought a few months of MyMusicToMe to test out. But, aside from requiring you to pay to access your own music as another poster pointed out, it does not support playlists or search. Not much to recommend for these reasons.

So I'm really delighted to see this new offering.

I'm wondering if this is something you will be able to make available to all sonos users as a supported service. MyMusicToMe was rejected by sonos for some reason, so using them requires a cumbersome workaround that likely scares away many potential users.

I really look forward to testing this!

hi there,

it's REALLY weird ... never heard of subsonic and we are looking for a solution for our family-house Sonos setup for months now.
Now we discovered Subsonic with a super-fresh support of Sonos. :D
Works like a charm, we really like it! We wouldn't have thought it is a beta!

Now that Sonos supports multi-accounts in combination with Subsonic we have no troubles anymore to get the playlists of the family mixed up.
We LOVE the radio feature and the random feature. But we still have to clean up pur folder structure a bit, because these features only show up in the last folder.
It would be great if tracks/artists/albums could be starred or liked in the Sonos controller - or songs could be casted from the Subsonic player (web/mobile) to sonos.

Thank you so much! Great work!

So I initially thought that in order to beta test we had to post on this thread with specs, and that we'd then be contacted with info on how to beta test (seem to have missed Sindre's post with the download link). But I quickly realized that all that is required now is to download the latest beta version of subsonic (5.2.beta1) and then follow the ridiculously easy steps listed here:

http://www.subsonic.org/pages/sonos.jsp

Been waiting so long for a way to access my subsonic playlists on sonos and get around the library size limit (this is a big issue for many sonos users and this is far and away the best solution I've seen). This new feature was so simple and works so well, I could hardly believe it.

So far in my testing I've noticed only two issues, but the first is a rather big one.

1) Sound quality. As other posters here have noted this mechanism streams music to sonos in mp3 format (one person claimed 128kbps -- not sure how they knew that). I've been ripping to flac for many years now and even my old mp3s are encoded at high bitrates. I definitely notice a large difference in my a-b testing, playing the same track in sonos directly from my networked server, and through the subsonic sonos app. So I am delighted to have seen that Sindre is planning to accommodate streaming quality equivalent to what sonos allows. I eagerly await that upgrade.

2) Search. Search basically works great with just one caveat. For some reason subsonic search results are not sorted by relevance. For example, when I search my library in subsonic for "The Kooks", the exact match, "The Kooks" is the fifth of nine results I get. Not really even sure why the other eight even appear. This has nothing to do with the sonos interface, it is just the way subsonic works wherever the search is performed. But since sonos only lists the top three results, I have to hit the "more" button to see the correct match. This is a minor quibble. Not such a big deal to hit "more". But I mention this in an effort to be a diligent beta tester.

Overall, I'm delighted to finally have this solution available. I'll post back here if I encounter any other issues.

UPDATE: Feel I should comment here on the sound quality issue noted above as that issue has now been COMPLETELY resolved. After following the steps now posted on

http://www.subsonic.org/pages/sonos.jsp (under advanced -> lossless audio)

I now get equivalent (to my ears) sound quality streaming my flac files directly from my server through sonos and streaming the same files through the subsonic interface in sonos. I did extensive A-B testing and both of these approaches sound dramatically better than when playing mp3 versions of the same songs. I can't overstate how happy I am about this. Thanks Sindre!

i looked at the log when i streamed a FLAC file to my Sonos (play:1). I forget what version of subsonic i was using then (5.2?) but i am currently on 5.2beta1 and now i see its set to 192k

Code: Select all
TranscodeInputStream   Starting transcoder: [/Library/Application Support/Subsonic/transcode/ffmpeg] [-i] [/Volumes/Music/E/vaporcake - -vpk003- elizabeth veldon - queen victoria's mech suit/vaporcake - -vpk003- elizabeth veldon - queen victoria's mech - 01 The Infernal Machines Of Victorian Britain.flac] [-map] [0:0] [-b:a] [192k] [-v] [0] [-f] [mp3] [-]

the sonos player in subsonic is set to "No Limit" so i assume that 192k is hardcoded in the sonos beta stuff.

i could be very wrong and miss reading something.

I changed the default transcoding bitrate from 128 to 192 kbps in 5.2.beta1.
To disable the transcoding, select Settings > Players, select the Sonos player, and then disable the "mp3 audio" transcoding. (This will be documented on subsonic.org)

hi sindre,

as I'm totally new to subsonic and I thought my lack of basic subsonic-knowledge is causal for my question I postet this Sonos related question in the "Help"-Section: "Sonos without Sonos controller - how?" http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15295
But nobody seems to know so I'm getting unsure if it's maybe a not correctly working feature and I should have posted it in here.

Would you mind to answer in that thread or explain here what you mean with "Doesn't require installation of the Sonos controller." on your Subsonic/Sonos website?

In addition I can report back - besides the scrobbling still no issues: three people are heavily using Subsonic via Sonos in our household for a week now; mostly with the "Artist Radio". Sooooo GREAT! :D :D :D
Sometimes someone is using the wrong account - not paying enough attention to the user-name ... our own fault. But I think that's a Sonos-thing how they set up their multi-account-support and you cannot do anything to make it a bit more obvious which account is selected (i.e. show the subsonic user avatar as logo *dream* )

Again: THANKS! :)

Sorry, my description is a bit imprecise. My point was that you don't have to install the Sonos controller on the computer where you host your music files. You can for instance just use the iOS/Android Sonos app as a remote control.

It's unfortunately not possible to control Sonos from Subsonic. Sonos doesn't provide an API for doing that.

Control a Sonos box with PHP. Not an official API, but it seems to work.

Sindre-

Any progress on sharing a Subsonic account with another user not on the same network?

thanks- that would be a killer feature.

I can't thank you enough for implementing this! I've been using Sonos for a few years. I love how simple and stable they are but hate how closed and slow they are to implement new features. I ended up signing up for Spotify just for Sonos to get around the various limitations of using your own collection in Sonos, but it looks like I'll be able to get rid of that subscription. I'm already lifetime, but I just sent a donation cause this was definitely a bonus!

Any plans to implement starring/rating from Sonos to Subsonic. I've got a large collection and I'm always rediscovering stuff with the radio feature, it'd be nice to be able to star them for later.

I'm also working on my own web app to sync my likes/stars from Pandora/Spotify to Subsonic so I'm going to be using the Starred feature more and more.
