External subsonic library not working with Sonos

Postby phillipmcmahon » Fri Feb 27, 2015 12:44 am

I have both Subonsic and Sonos installed in my internal network. For the purpose of this question I don't mind posting the information so people can check it out and hopefully help me.

My Subsonic instance is running on port 80 and 443 with a valid SSL certificate installed and available at the following URL

https://server.phillipmcmahon.com

Everything works perfectly both internal and external to my network. I have tested this using the web interface and subsonic and dsub android apps. I can play, download etc. etc.

I am trying to make this Subsonic library available to another external Sonos system I have via the Sonos custom music service method shown at the following page;

http://www.subsonic.org/pages/sonos.jsp

The attached screenshot shows the values I enter into the web page and the page returns with a success on submission.

Internally to my network this works perfectly on my Sonos system. The service is added, the account authenticates. Lists are displayed along with the album art and the music plays fine.

However when adding the service with the exact same values to an external Sonos system things don't quite work as well.

    The custom service is added with success
    The service is added via the controller with a subsonic account and successfully authenticates
    The service is visible in Sonos
    All lists, albums, recently added, etc. etc. display
    However this is no album art showing
    Music can be added to the queues
    When attempting the play tracks after a few seconds of what appears to be trying to play an error message is shown saying that the service cannot be connected to.

Purely for diagnostics I added my subsonic server to a fully exposed DMZ to see whether there was some network blocking happening but this still did not solve a thing. The subsonic.log shows very little to help, with the only clue being the following entry;

WARN SonosFaultInterceptor Error: org.apache.cxf.interceptor.Fault

I would love to get this working so that I can simple maintain one music library across my Sonos sytems but I have run out of things to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Problem kind of solved for now.

It appears as though accessing an external Subsonic library from Sonos isn't quite what it seemed.

Hopefully a workaround should appear.
