*.Subsonic.org address and Sonos

Postby sgrabowski » Sun Apr 26, 2015 2:37 pm

Hi - I'm trying to set up my girlfriend's Sonos Play 1 to stream from my subsonic server remotely, but I'm having difficulties with the instructions provided on the sonos.subsonic.org page as I want to use the *.subsonic.org address that I have set up in the server settings.

I know that the address works, I have tested it at her place and it streams fine on her Mac. When I substitute the SUBSONIC_IP with the *.subsonic.org address in the Sonos settings the speaker is unable to connect to the server, unless I use the absolute ip address (109.***.**.***). I tried the different combinations I could think of that would work such as using just *.subsonic.org as a replacement for SUBSONIC_IP, and then including the port too (eg *.subsonic.org:4040).

Does anyone have any settings/instructions that work for this setup? I don't want to have to get my girlfriend to manually change the settings every time my IP changes. I saw someone doing similar with their own domain, but I think the way that the *.subsonic.org addresses forward may be the issue (??). Any info is much appreciated.

I thought I'd post back to share some success....

I couldn't get the subsonic.org address to work no matter what combinations I tried, so I just gave up! Instead I used a noip dynamic dns address, which my ISP's modem updates daily. Now it seems to be working fine her end. If anyone finds the solution to why the subdomains don't work I'd be intrigued to know.

It's a known DNS issue with the way subsonic.org addresses are resolved. Accessing your Subsonic site by *.subsonic.org from any computer on your "local" network will resolve to the private IP address (192.168.1.x) of the computer you are accessing Subsonic from. If you happen to be accessing from the same computer that Subsonic is running on, it will work, but check the IP address in the address bar - it will be your local IP address, not the WAN address assigned by your ISP.

I had to use a No-IP address to work around this as well....
