Audio 'glitching' with Note 5

Postby jpilcicki » Wed Oct 14, 2015 5:28 pm

Hey guys,

Has anyone else encountered an audio glitch issue with Dsub and a Samsung Galaxy Note 5? I need to do more testing to see if the issue is isolated with the Note 5, but it definitely started occurring when I got the phone. Some tracks when downloaded have a random audio 'glitch' at random times on playback. It's not a server issue, as I've noticed the issue from tracks downloaded from both my and a friend's server. It's not constant, on some tracks it happens frequently (every 30 seconds) and others, rarely. It's also weird in that it's never at the same time, I can play a track multiple times and it won't always glitch out at the same times, but if it's a glitchy track it'll happen a lot vs a non glitchy track. It's also not a headphone issue as it happens with multiple sets of headphones. Although I'd need to do more testing to see if it is isolated to headphones only.

Any ideas? I thought it might have to do with the sound profiles/enhancements that Samsung allows for, but I've turned all of that off and the problem persists. I'm wondering if it was a download issue where bits are missing, but it seems odd that it occurs at different times on each playthrough.

Upon doing a bit more digging, it appears to be an issue with the Note 5 and VBR MP3s, so, not a dSub or subsonic issue. That said... anyone familiar with the issue enough to be able to think of a possible solution? Happens whether I play through the dSub app or through Shuttle. The link below suggests Poweramp, but I'm not sure how that would help if using Shuttle didn't fix the issue.

PowerAmp uses it's own audio renderer whereas DSub and probably Shuttle as well use the default system one. You can also set Subsonic to not output VBR mp3s since the entire point of it's transcoding engine is to make the output whatever the device can play.

Excellent - I'll give PowerAmp a shot then.

If I set subsonic to not output VBR mp3, would that degrade audio quality or increase processor use? I feel like if I'm just playing them straight as downloaded, it won't get transcoded from MP3 to MP3 and lose some quality. Ideally, I'd rather do everything in dSub, love the app.

This actually all makes sense now. Thinking about files I didn't have issues with, they were all FLACs server side transcoded to mp3. The ones I had problems with were ones that were VBR server side.

Thanks for the help! You solved a problem that has been driving me insane for a little while.
