iSub Music Streamer: Signs of Life!

Postby Boutros » Mon Feb 01, 2016 5:27 pm

This post on Facebook over the weekend made my day:

Not quite dead yet…

I am no longer contractually prevented from creating feature updates and am once again actively developing iSub!

At a startup now, so iSub will not be full time work, but finishing up Swift port, code cleanup, and iPhone 6. Then more UI work. No ETAs ;)

And there was much rejoicing...

Thanks for the mention :)

iSub is in fact coming back from the dead, or more like from it's coma!

I had been working at Apple for the past two years, so I was not allowed to work on feature updates, only bug fixes and compatibility. Currently doing a pretty major code overhaul of iSub to modernize it and port it to Swift.

Making great progress, and I'll continue to update on Twitter and Facebook.

Such great news... Just out of curiosity: I'm a MusicCabinet dead-ender. Will the updates you're making be compatible with MC, or is this going to be the straw that breaks the proverbial camel's back and makes me move to something else?

I'm not too familiar with MusicCabinet. Does iSub not work with it at all, or does it just not support the extra features?

I might be losing my mind, but I could have sworn I had a conversation with you a couple of years back (maybe on the old iSubapp.com forum?), about how you'd built iSub specifically to pair with MusicCabinet! The website is here, in case it refreshes your memory: http://dilerium.se/musiccabinet/ - I can also PM you an account to my server if you want to see it in the wild.

At any rate, MusicCabinet is a really lovely mod, based (I believe) on Subsonic 4.6. It's tag-based, rather than folder-based, and it does really cool things with the Last.fm API. Unfortunately, it's been abandoned by its developer, so people have been drifting away from it over the last year or two. But I just love it too much to give it up until I have to. It works beautifully with iSub currently (I've used them together every day for the last several years).

I was just curious as to whether the updates you have in the pipeline would be what finally pushes it into obsolescence for me. I guess I'll have to wait and find out!
