Is it possible to have all songs on one playlist?

Postby audixe » Mon Sep 28, 2009 7:59 pm

I've searched the forum numerous times and can't find anything related to this topic. What I like to do on my personal computer, is add all of my music to Winamp and then randomize the music and set it to shuffle. So, basically it will play random songs from ALL of my music.

Well, I am wondering if there is a way to do this. I tried doing the following on my server:

1. installed Winamp and added all of my music to a playlist.
2. added the playlist to my Playlists folder and then logged into Subsonic as a user and selected the playlist and loaded it.

Note: This is a brand new Dell PowerEdge T105, Dual Core AMD 2.3GHZ, 4GB of RAM and I gave subsonic at least 512MB in the settings

After I tried to load the playlist, basically nothing happened. I have over 8,000 songs right now, so I figured that would take a long time to add all of it. I then decided to just see what would happen if I just used 1,000 songs, instead of 8,000. The result this time was it took about a minute to load all of the songs and that did seem to work.

When I added the 8,000 songs at first the second time, (since adding 1,000 seemed to work...with a little delay) I gave it probably 10 minutes to load the playlist, but that never happened. Realistically, even if it did load, it wouldn't be feasible to wait that long for a playlist to load.

So back to the question, is it possible to add all of your songs to a playlist so that I can play random songs from my whole collection? I really don't like having to select which Artist/CD/Song I want to listen to, one by one. Sometimes I just want whatever it plays.

Also, to Sindre....I love your product. I bought a server just so I could run subsonic (although I do have other ideas for it), but it helps so that I don't have to carry external drives with me and my friends benefit from it too.

If you just want a complete random list of your entire music collection to go on and on then I would suggest you go to More -> Random Playlist -> make your genre selection or choose Any -> Check the "Play more random songs when end of playlist is reached." button and click OK. Now you've got an unlimited long random playlist of your entire collection :)

May not be quite what you were looking for, but it should solve the precise problem you were talking about..

I guess I didn't look hard enough haha, thanks Jigsaw! That will work...I can understand it can take a long time to load a huge list of songs because with 50 random songs it took a few seconds to load the playlist. It was a good playlist though :)

However, I don't see a "Play more random songs when end of playlist is reached" or really any other options for the random playlist (see screenshot). Not a big deal though because I can just keep making random playlists.

Thanks!

Version 3.7 (build 898) – June 15, 2009

I have the above version and that check box is not there. Was it removed from this version or forgotten?

Interesting..

I've just run a quick test and it seems there is a bug in subsonic. I do not know when the bug has been introduced but it seems that any user created on subsonic 3.7 or newer ( maybe even older versions ) do not see the "Play more random songs" checkbox.

I verified this by creating a new user and gradually increased the permissions of this user finally up to administrator - still no checkbox ( other features of admin appeared though so no caching issue neither ). However my own personal user ( I only use the admin-user for administrating, the personal user for streaming ) has the checkbox. This personal user which works was created at first install some years ago when I first installed Subsonic 3.2.

Guess we need to get Sindre's attention on this one :)

Extra info on the bug:

I've verified that the bug still exists even though there are no differences in the tables USER, USER_ROLE or USER_SETTINGS.

I tested the user in Chrome, but it works in chrome on my regular user.

Sorry for the late reply.

It's actually intended. The "Play more..." option is only visible if the your player is of type "External player" or "Jukebox".

There is a technical reason for this: Only these player types have their playlists stored and managed server-side.

Doesn't the web-player have the playlist stored server-side? Verified as you say that it is indeed not a bug. Newly created testuser does get the option when player-setting is altered to external player and the default player for new users is web-player.

PS: On a side-note I noticed that when you delete a user the playlists created by that user is not purged. When I re-created the testuser with the same name today the playlist created yesterday appeared. Insignificant, but yet worth mentioning.
