All that ranting aside, BloodyIron, I need to thank you: In thinking about a use case for cross-fading (e.g., a DJ like system), I've actually designed in my head a basic DJ-type app that (using my hack of 2 audio tags, effectively each representing a record platter), might actually be able to handle the cross-fade and gapless. It would only be desktop-browsers, but a 'client' app could provide tablet/phone users the ability to see the songs played and make requests that could get automatically queued up (using the chat feature to pass JSON strings to the DJ app).

As an app writer, I've always been more concerned with the API flexibility and stability more than anything specific about the Web UI. I figure (and maybe Sindre does as well) that targeted applications and features may be best as just that: specialized in apps rather than crowding the already crowded main Web UI. We've gotten very used to players that are just that, players, but as I've written with the playlist "radio" generator (http://subfireplayer.net/radio/), there are other things the API can support than just yet another music player.

That said, I do agree with much of your earlier concerns with the risks of closed-source software, when managed by only a single person, as somewhat high. Should a tragic accident happen, we all have no way to carry on with our own collective investments except through the forks off the 5.3 branch, so much development from that point would be lost...and in time, the 5.3 code base (given its dependency on Flash in JPlayer, as well as the state of J2EE as of this moment in time) will not work out-of-the-box unless someone continues to keep it up. That's even without the security aspects and concerns. It isn't enough for me to move elsewhere (and I agree with Sindre's counter-concerns: the forks like Madsonic each collect their own license revenues but I expect little of that comes back to Sindre - the GPL or MIT licenses make that possible, but how ethical it is for those services is up to each to decide), but I can understand that particular concern.

Well cross-fading was more an example of a feature request that's been posted for years, as in plural, but not even addressed; than necessarily specifically a deal-breaker.

I would rather see some sort of ticketing system so that Sindre can manage the requests and we can get an idea of when he plans to implement it.

You're welcome for the idea? lol

Oh I'm also actually pretty ticked that the chromecast video thing hasn't even been talked about. >:|

Updating to Subsonic 6.0 has caused an error stating "No Media Folders Found" My media folders are on a NAS folder and have worked fine in subsonic previously. Any idea what's wrong here.

Just like with every release...you must go to the subsonic service and set it to log in as a user with rights to the network location. At least, that's how it's done in Windows.

Probably haven't done an update in awhile and forgot this step.

I didn't have to do that with my upgrade. While you may be right, it's odd that such a step is necessary anyways.

I've had to do that every single update for many years now. Pretty sure it was Sindre himself that told me what to do when I was having the same problem.

Argh! Just upgraded from 6.beta2 to 6.0 and its lost the database :-(
No users, no premium licence, no settings etc. every other upgrade has gone smoothly other than the discussion directly above I can't see anyone else having a problem ?
Running under Windows server 2003. I can restore to the last backup OK, but a second upgrade was identical all settings lost ....
Any suggestions ?

Is it possible to get the Subsonic icon in Sonos?

Not unless this gets registered as an official Sonos music service. Right now Subsonic appears to register itself using the /customsd hidden menu on a Sonos device on your local network, and that method of registration does not provide a way to add an icon.

The only way (that I have been able to determine) for Subsonic to become a "proper" registered music service is for the creator to follow the directions listed on this page -

OK no suggestions but restoring the subsonic/db folder and re-registering seems to have brought the system back as it was, might need a bit more testing yet to be certain!

EDIT: Spoke to soon Jukebox mode is not outputting anything sensible on the audio stream, so back to 6.0 beta2 until its fixed :-( ......

check out emby for video streaming... basically open source version of Plex with more control over your content. their app should cast without issue from what I've heard, though i can't test because i don't have a chromecast. I've found it superior to subsonic for video for a while now. subsonic is still tops for music though.

Maybe this is unrelated to your issue; but I've been having problems with Chromecast since v5. It worked for a long time and then suddenly stopped. I couldn't figure it out. The Chromecast would clearly still receive the signal, I could see the subsonic logo come up, but it never actually loaded the source file.

I eventually figured out it was my custom URL screwing things up. It worked fine on external networks but when in my house, on my network, it couldn't re-direct to the custom URL. Probably some kind of loop.

Anyway, I changed the web address back to the subsonic provided one and everything started working again.

It is really disappointing that this project is no longer open-source. I use Subsonic for five years and I made donations over the years and a lifetime donation just few weeks before this announcement. I feel fool, some said scammed but it is too strong in my opinion, because this change comes without prior notice.
I think that it is a mistake because Subsonic will loose the support of the free software community, and I am pretty sure that they are the most willing to make donation. Indeed, we are proud to use such a great media streamer and it allows us to brag before people talking about the "power of open-source".
I don't think having its own project and don't accept other to contribute is a problem in open-source, however, as already mentioned: what about the legacy the day that the maintainer of this software stops its development? It is for me a practical issue, as it happened to me already few times to use software where the main developer left. Beside, there are the other obvious reasons of the assets of open-source development.
I don't know about the technical issue with the proprietary third-party, but I am sure that the people who use Subsonic forks to bypass the licence are people who will not pay the licence without these forks in any case.
Maybe a workaround could be to make it an open-source project but not a free software, so releasing Subsonic under a licence that does not allow forks, but I don't know if it is possible.

It's insane (and probably a violation of terms) to no longer be open-source. The excuse is a poor one as well, since any license keys/codes could just be put into an external file or something (and not part of source), while keeping the source code open.

So very disappointing, I've been using subsonic for such a long time. Suppose a move to ampache is next, since it supports subsonic API. Shame.
