Variable speed playback on android 5.0 or lower?

What are the chances of supporting variable speed playback on android before 6.0?

It is possible, probably because they wrote their own code to do it, because Smart AudioBook Player does it in 5.0.

I know it is possible by writing your own MediaPlayer, but I really have no intention of doing that any time soon. I only added variable Playback speed support in the first place because it was added to the system player.

Understandable. Could you remove the variable speed icon on versions of Android that don't support it. It just sits there teasing me.
