"Settings" are no longer showing up for my admin account

Postby toekneelin » Wed Oct 26, 2016 10:42 am

Hi, I've been a long time SubSonic user and have rarely come across issues that I have not been able to fix, until now.

Out of the blue, the "Settings" option on the left-hand panel has disappeared for my main admin account. Interestingly enough, I can still access the settings by just typing in /settings.view in my browser. Even more interesting as that I can also see "Settings" when I login as a new user that I just created as an Administrator.

I am on the latest version. So far, I have restarted Subsonic, restarted my computer, re-installed Subsonic, but nothing has fixed the problem. The logs do not show anything interesting and I have scoured the interwebs for anyone that has come across this problem before, but I haven't had any luck.

Has anyone seen this issue before? If so, how can I go about troubleshooting this and resolving it?

Poking around even more, it looks like I can't get anything to work with my admin account. Songs will not reply, videos will not load properly and I get a "hlsjs: Network error". In fact, all the buttons like "Play All", "Queue All", etc, so it appears that the admin account got corrupted or something. Would re-building the database fix this issue?

The logs do not show anything out of the unusual.

Thank you for reading and thanks for your help!

You can set permissions on a per-user basis. Before doing anything drastic, if you can get into the settings through one of your backdoor methods, got to Settings > Users and make sure you didn't inadvertently uncheck things such as "User is allowed to play files" and "User is allowed to change personal settings and password." Good luck.

Thank you for your response. That is what I initially thought the problem was, so when I created a different administrator account to view the permissions for the default "admin" account, there is nothing there for me to modify besides what folders are allowed to be accessed. By default, is it supposed to look like this because it's the default admin account or did this somehow get corrupted?

The default admin account is a "fixed" account. You can't disable it, rename or change privileges on it. The only thing you can do is to modify what folders are accessible.
So, yes, that's what the admin account must look like when you try to edit/modify it.
Did you try to clear your browser cache / temporary internet files?

Thank you for the confirmation about the admin account.

Yes, I have tried all that and I have also tried different computers with no luck.

I basically can't do anything with the admin account. Nothing will play and nothing shows up on the right-hand panel to show me that the admin username is even trying to play something.

Is there a way that I can reset the admin account somehow? I really don't want to delete my database, but if I have to in order to fix this problem, then I will most likely decide to do it because this is driving me insane.

You could try "updating" Subsonic with it's own version. Perhaps you're in luck and your admin-account works again.
I can't think of any other way to reset the admin account than to delete the database.
However If you already created another account with admin-privileges why don't you just go with that account and forget about the default admin account. Deny the default admin account acces to all folders and you have gracefully "retired" the account.
Seems to me a lot easier than to delete your database and starting from scratch configuring your media folders, users, networksettings and all that stuff. Don't forget that all the effort you might have made to write comments and starring music will also be lost.

I tried "updating" Subsonic by re-installing the latest version that I am currently on, but that did not help.

I was hoping there would be an easy way to reset the default admin account, but there doesn't seem to be. You are right, it certainly is easier to just use my new admin account and disable the default account, but I hate not knowing what the cause of this was, how to fix, and how to prevent it from happening to future users. It's such a weird and random problem and I'm curious to know if this has happened to anyone else.

Thanks for your helps.
