Problems with Android App

Postby fjohnette » Thu Oct 15, 2009 6:07 pm

I just downloaded the Android app. I can access the server and play music from my PC with no problems.

From my phone I can access the server and navigate through all my music. But I can't play any songs. When I click "play" a notification appears and says its playing but then that quickly goes away and nothing happens. No music, no movement on the song timeline bar... nothing.

I have a myTouch running donut. Any fixes or am I gonna have to wait this one out?

I have the same problem. I did discover when I use wifi on my android phone it works, but it doesn't over 3g. Of course this problem only happens on the linux version and not the windows version. Very frustrating

It won't work for me on wifi or 3G. The server is running on Windows 7.

I am getting a "Server not Licensed" error when I try to play. I'm going go to uninstall the server and try again from scratch.

I think I found my problem. If you look in the "help" section on the app it says its free to use for 30 days and then you need to donate. I've had the server installed on my system for quite some time so I'm assuming the 30 day time limit is for the server since I got that error message the first time I tried running my Android app.

Here's the problem. The suggested donation is $20. Am I going to pay $20 to hopefully get an app to work that I've never seen work before? Probably not. A trial and a paid app would make a little more sense. Or you can download the gmote app and stream music and video (if your lucky with the video part) for free. But gmote has no web UI like subsonic.

Overall, Subsonic seems like the best solution to stream music to your phone especially if you already have the server set up on your computer. But I'm still not going to pay to find out for sure.

Hi,

The 30 day trial period is specific to the phone; it starts counting the first time you use the Android app.

Regarding problems with streaming: I've added some new features in the final 1.0 release that will improve the situation a bit, I think. There's a new option called "Download + Play" which will (surprise, surprise...) download the selected tracks and play them once they're available. There is of course a significant delay for the first song, but I think it works quite well. You also get the ability to skip within a song.

Furthermore, previously downloaded tracks can now be played from the Subsonic interface, without having to use a different player. Tracks that are downloaded are clearly marked in the user interface.

That's exactly the functionality I hoped was coming to the Android App.

Any idea when you're likely to release version 1.0?

BTW I'm loving the app. If you ever need beta testers then please let me know.

This might make me cancel my Spotify Premium account as I mostly listen on my phone to music I already own!

I was also having problems streaming to my G1 over both wifi and 3G. But I fixed these problems by going onto the server/settings/players/ select player "android [username]" and setting the "max bitrate" to 128. since then every song I try to play buffers quickly and starts playing without a hitch. Give that a try If your still having that problem. Might be a fix for you as well.

Just spotted this thread when posting on a similar one:

http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtop ... =7423#7423

I had exactly the same problem and 128kbps fixed it, but now it reports incorrect playing time and stops about halfway through the track.

Anyone else seen the same issue?

I'm actually having the exact same problem! I didn't even put it together that the 128 max bitrate might have something to do with it. It has stoped me from using the app but its quite a drag when your rocking out and you get cut off before the end or your song.

Glad it's not just me. Just tried over 3G (which is pretty cool btw, streaming tracks over mobile network from your home server to your android!) and same issue. Played a track which should be 4:09 and subsonic registers it as 7:09 and then stops abruptly before it's due to end.

If they can get this fixed then I would be seriously tempted to part with some money to license the server, downloading is good but its also cool to stream it live too.

I was having difficulty streaming to my G1...

If you look at your list of songs in the subsonic app, you'll notice the line of text immediately below each song title includes the artist and data regarding the bitrate (ex: "Mazzy Star (169 Kbps mp3)").

Changing the setting of the android player's max bitrate (via the Subsonic server) to accommodate the LOWEST Kbps contained in my personal music collection (32 Kbps) made me able to stream most songs via Android (on 3G and Wifi) without any increase in buffing time and no cutoffs mid-song. The only songs I am now unable to play are the handful that list a Kbps lower than 32 Kbps.

I am unsure if this will work for everyone, but I just wanted to share a possible solution.

...now I'm off to license my server...

I try everything. My problem is exactly as

Moonraker76

Solved one and onto the next...

Now it stops playing the song halfway through the track and some, if not most, seem to be reporting incorrect playing time when playing, almost double the time it should be. This is when running at 128kbps. Any higher and pretty much all songs won't play.

For now the download and play option seems best but its a shame the streaming doesn't work very well at the moment. All in all though a very accomplished piece of work!

I try all birates and always show incorrect length and stops playing in the middle of the song.
Download for me is not and option. I just wanna to connect to the server and listen to my collection at home.

Thanks,
jneville

Topics 7429 and 7422 could be merged if that's possible? Seems both are related to the same issue.
