Thank you Subsonic, saying goodbye!

Postby bcrivers » Thu Nov 23, 2017 4:50 pm

I have been a user since Subsonic first came out. Just wanted to say thank you for all the great work and many years of music enjoyment using your app. Development has been kinda slow the last few years, so I decided to move my music over to Plex Music which seems to handle my large library just fine. So I wish subsonic the best!

Howdy, long time listener here too.

Out of interest, what attracts you to Plex that Subsonic doesn't have? I'm a Plex addict but Subsonic is so darn good I don't intend stopping using it any time soon.

for myself, I prefer plex for video, but I prefer subsonic for audio because of the variety of clients and the open and published API to make my own. It frustrates me to no end that the API for plex isn't published. I'd love to make an automatic playlist "radio" generator for it much like I did already for subsonic.

My main reasons for moving to Plex,

#1 Can play my music across almost every device, with ease, Xbox, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, phones, computers, etc. Subsonic does this, but it requires some work.
#2 It beautifully populates cover art and lyrics.
#3 Search results work, unlike subsonic sometimes search results don't return anything. I know for a fact I have the search item. THIS WAS MY MAIN REASON FOR MOVING OVER.
#4 Filtering options and Plex music (like pandora)

Although Sindre seems to have slowed down development to a point where one could argue that the lack of some 'modern' features feels outdated...

I think Subsonic is still better than Plex (regarding music), since it handles a music database much better, leaner and faster.
Plex feels slow to me, and I have to take care of two 'databases', the ID-tags of individual files and the Plex-DB. A full db-update in Plex takes 2 days, and I have to check if every artist/album/song-match is correct.
I think Subsonics online-match with Last.FM is much smoother and faster, and works better. Overall, if your tags are fine, Subsonic is fine. :D

I checked back with Subsonic to see if any development was done it. Looks like nothing has been changed in the last few months. Overall, I am happy with Plex, it took sometime to scan and populate the database, but it is now working smoothly. I was hoping Subsonic would continue development, but the last year or we have seen very little progress. I would have gladly paid more for an improved product.

Does anybody know what is happening with Subsonic? Is it dead?

After years of good services rendered by Subsonic, I've switched to Airsonic, an open source fork of Subsonic.

https://airsonic.github.io/

The product is not as good as Subsonic, but a community gathered and the quality seems to improve.

To paraphrase Zappa: "It's not dead, it just smells funny."

In that spirit, I've installed Airsonic--an open-source fork of Subsonic--in parallel with Subsonic. I'm giving Subsonic a few more months before shutting 'er down for good.

I've found renewed usage for subsonic after I've had the server running for years while i had switched to google music for the past couple years just because it had anything ive wanted to listen to and havent really had the need to buy actual mp3s. The renewed usage comes from my fitbit ionic purchase, theres pandora available on it but i dont use that because it seems you have to pay for a subcription to pandora to be able to cache things locally on the fitbit. I'm now finding myself use the shuffle playlist generation in subsonic and syncing music manually to the fitbit. I'll probably be updating subsonic from v4 to latest later today. I'm kind of excited to see how the html5 player works, i always hated the jwplayer. i might even drop my plex jail running on my nas and use subsonic if the transcoding has improved for my video media because i really only use plex as a dlna streamer to my ps3 and subsonic can do that just fine.

My biggest problem with Plex for music right now are:

1. The UI is not very good. Especially if you're in the car.
2. The lack of ReplayGain support is a complete deal breaker for me.
3. Lack of third party clients

Once you've used AVsub or Play:Sub on iOS or Dsub in Android, it's kind of hard to go back to the Plex client for music listening.

I had used both, until I started seeing the Plex database grow to a ridiculous size and consume my boot drive. Beware if your library is getting large!
