Installation package for Western Digital NAS

Postby johnfoliot » Tue Jun 25, 2019 10:41 pm

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right starting point, but here goes.

I currently have a 4 TB Western Digital My Cloud EX2 Extra NAS https://www.wd.com/products/network-attached-storage/my-cloud-expert-series-ex2-ultra.html, that allows for third-party applications to be installed (I am presuming a linux build). For example, I was able to install a Plex Media server (great for video, crap for music files) via the administration interface of the NAS. The installation file is a .bin file.

Wondering if we could see an installation file for the NAS for subsonic? Anybody?

Subsonic runs on Java, where-as a lot of those other applications in that list are Linux native or php based. If Java and a servlet engine (Tomcat or Jetty) can be installed, then so can the .war file from the downloads and theoretically it should work. But that's a big 'if'.

That said, subsonic's memory needs aren't very much. Here @ home, I just got a little $80 2gig memory refurb of a mini-PC, stuck Ubuntu on it, and that's my main server, just hosting from the files off the LAN from the NAS. It isn't like big movie/tv files where there's a ton of network relaying going on if I were to do that with Plex movies. You really only need a heavier box and closer-to-the-filesystem setup when your collection is all-FLAC and you're transposing to mp3 to serve over the internet.

Thank you for this response. I agree, and picking up old boxes to re-purpose as a subsonic server is easy-peasy... I was hoping for a set-up that eliminated the need for yet another box hanging off my router, but your big "IF" is just that, big. Thanks for the info though.
