Using Subsonic with AppleTV or Firestick

Postby Subsonic-Greenhorn » Sun Nov 14, 2021 10:45 am

Hi folks,

I have my media (music and videos) stored on a Synology NAS. Now I already learned, that there are some Apps (Android/Firestick) that will help playing files from my subsonic media server.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible to stream Videos on a) Firestick and/or b) Apple TV?
2. If yes, is it possible to stream MKV-Files (h264-Codec) on this devices?
3. If yes, is it possible to transcode DTS into Dolby Digital on the fly on this devices?

And something completely different:
4. I've stored some of my media on the Synology in encrypted folders. Where can I grant access to these in the subsonic application, so that specific users in the app can watch / listen these files?

Thanks in advance for your support :-)

Greetings,

I experimented with videos on SubFire and the Fire Stick and found it very inconsistent. If you don't have your transcodes set up just right, most videos just don't render, because the supported video formats for the FireTV webview (at least, at the time I did this, which admittedly was more than 3 years ago) were very restrictive. Even if it took m4v or mp4 formats, it still needed the codec to be in a particular configuration. Often either it was very choppy, or the video was black though the audio sounded fine. The web tester also crashed a lot (though again, this was years ago, things might be more stable now).

As I was already using plex for video, I gave up on it. SubFire TV Beta 2 (my supported client for FireStick/TV) only supports audio.

AFAIK there's no AppleTV client for subsonic at all. I've published a javascript (heck, typescript if you want) library for access, queue mgmt, that one could use to build such an app, but it is not something I have time to do myself, and again, if I did, my priority would be the music player and displaying album covers nicely. Plex is still my go-to for home video streaming.
