Instruction on how to access remotely

Postby ck100 » Sat Jan 09, 2010 7:29 pm

Can someone point me to the directions for setting up and accessing subsonic remotely? In my home, I can use http://localhost, but what do I need to do to access outside the home? I have cable modem and wireless router between my computer and the outside. Thanks, Non-techy

All you need to is open port 80 or 8080 to the outside world. Usually your router will have a configuration page that you can access in your browser. There you can forward ports which will make your install of subsonic available to the outside world.

Each router is configured very differently. If you are having problems, post your router make and model and I can maybe help you open up a port for subsonic.

Thanks! I have netgear wpn824 v2. I see the port forwarding tab and there is an option to add a custom service. It asks for service type, starting port, ending port and server IP. I have entered starting port as 8080, ending port as 8080, and server ip as needed. I'm not sure of the service type.

I can still access via the host computer, but entering the http://192.xxx.x.x:8080 on other computers in my home does not allow me to access.

Also, once I get the port open, what URL do I type from a remote location? Aren't there tons of 192.XXX.X.X IPs in the world?

Thanks!

Well, 192.x.x.x is an internal ip address. It can only be used to assign addresses to computer on an network or intranet. That's strange that you cannot access subsonic from inside your own network on that address. To access your computer remotely you must find out its external ip address. You can find it by going to ipchicken.com from your computer.

Also, I wrote up a tutorial so everyone could use the information:

But please post back with more questions if you still need help.

Thanks! I read your post and did everything in it. For some reason, I still cannot access it using the external IP.

For external access, I've setup the port forwarding for my 192.xxx.x.x Ip with port beginning and end set at 8080 and service type is set as TCP/UDP. I went to ipchicken and got my current IP. I enter it as 98.192.xx.xxx:8080, but still get page not found.

Thanks, newbie

Do you have a software firewall setup on your computer acting as your subsonic server? That could be why you can't see it from another computer.

What OS are you running Subsonic on? Check the read permissions on the file/directory to make sure it can be read.

As to your accessing from the outside world, get it working within your network first. The port forwarding only has to do with connections coming in form the outside world. Like tacgnol posted in his tutorial, you can sign up for one of the dynamic IP forwarding companies so you don't have to remember your IP. If you look in your router settings, you might see that it has a setting for DDNS (mine does Linksys WRT54GL) which will update the service with your IP so you don't have to run a client on your computer to keep it up to date. I use Dyndns.

Do you know what port you have Subsonic running on? I think default is 8080. You said in your first post you just use http://localhost. That tells me its running on port 80 as it is the default port for a web browser to go to if you are not specifying it.
Subsonic 5.3
Ubuntu 14.04
