Differences in Various Versions?

OK, I'm confused about some terminology. I have a SubSonic running on a computer at home, and am going to be moving or migrating it to a new one that I just built. I was looking on the website, and saw that there is the windows installer, and the standalone installer that also can be installed on windows. What's the difference between them? is one better than the other?

OK, I think I get it, or at least part of it. The standalone install includes the web server portion, when the Windows install doesn't? I'm running it on a Windows Home Server box, which already runs IIS, so I guess I don't need the standalone version.

There are two different versions you can run on Windows:

• Windows Installer - This is the program PLUS Jetty which is a combination Web Server and Java Servlet container (all three of which are necessary for Subsonic to function) all wrapped into one easy to install package. This is the package for most users.
• Standalone Installer - This is JUST the Subsonic application that you can install into your already running Java Servlet container. Unfortunately, IIS is not one of these. There is a way to get Tomcat working as a Java Servlet container for IIS, but it is more work than it is worth.

Basically the Windows installer simplifies the process for you and is the "all-in-one" install.

As you can see in my sig, I am running Windows Home Server as well. As you can also see, I am not following my own advise, and am running the standalone version.

I ran the Windows Installer/Jetty version for a long time. Recently some discussion about the performance differences between Jetty and Tomcat made me want to try the standalone version in Tomcat. I am happy to say that there is noticeable performance improvement. But it came at a price: much more complicated installation procedures.

But my server is heavily hit all day long. So your average windows user is fine with the Windows/Jetty version.

That's cool. I am upgrading to WHS2011. I have a similar system. It's an AMD dual core with 3GB RAM, with 8TB of space. I believe that I'm running 4.4. I only have three users, so my server doesn't get hit all that hard. I'm replacing my old server because it's a P4 with 2GB RAM, and it's having some issues these days.
