[SOLVED] Newbie Question

Postby jhansen317 » Sun Nov 06, 2011 2:40 am

Hello all,

Problem Description: I just installed (and donated to) subsonic on my desktop and everything works amazingly well - except that I cannot connect to the server when I am not connected to my wireless network. I mean, I would be happy if I never resolved this (I can stream all of my .flac files on my phone, roku, other computers, all at the same time anywhere in the house, which is awesome) but it would be great if I could extend that to areas outside of my home.

Troubleshooting Steps: I'm not really sure what steps to take - subsonic tells me that port forwarding is working correctly and there is an entry in the list of "virtual servers" on the configuration page for my router that says "subsonic" that I did not put there...I think it has something to do with needing a static IP but I'm confused about how to do this in linux (all the stuff I've found on the web is for windows or tells me I need to buy it from my ISP, which I suspect is BS.)
I believe this is the heart of the problem, and conveniently happens to be a complete mystery to me.

Playback Application and version: Browser, Android app, roku Subsonic TV, all work perfectly when connected to the wifi.

Subsonic Version: 4.5 (build 2384) – August 10, 2011

Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_22, Linux (55.4 MB / 98.6 MB)

Hardware Platform: Ubuntu 11.04

Java Memory Limit: ? n/a?

Problem Filename: No transcoding problems

Output from ffmpeg -i: ditto

Code: Select all
[11/5/11 8:45:28 PM CDT]    WARN   NetworkService   Failed to register web address.
[11/5/11 8:45:28 PM CDT]    WARN   NetworkService   Failed to test web address.
[11/5/11 8:45:31 PM CDT]    INFO   NetworkService   Successfully forwarding port 4040.

I'm sorry if this is an easy fix and I failed to find the solution elsewhere in the forums, but any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Have you registered your subsonic.org address? That will take care of your IP address problem.

To test if the port really is open go to http://canyouseeme.org and test your port (4040)

Your server does need a static IP within your own lan however and that can usually be done from the router.
(look for something like LAN IP setup in the router config pages)

I just realized that I left this out of my initial post, but when I try to register through the browser interface, I get this message:

xxxxxxx.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (ConnectTimeoutException)

Canyouseeme cannot see me on port 4040. Interestingly, sites like canyouseeme and whatismyip tell me my ip address is one thing, but ifconfig and my router config page tell me something different...please excuse my ignorance, I think I'm missing some basic knowledge about how networks work.

As for the router config page: On the menu on the left side there is an "Internet WAN" category. Underneath that there is a "connection types" which, when I click on it brings me to a list with these two first options, of which Dynamic is selected by default.
Dynamic
A Dynamic type of connection is the most common. If you use a cable modem, then most likely you will have a dynamic connection. If you have a cable modem or you are not sure of your connection type, use this.
Static
A Static IP address connection type is less common than others. Use this selection only if your ISP gave you an IP address that never changes.

If I select Static it asks me for IP Address, subnet mask and ISP Gateway Address, along with DNS settings.

I imagine this is what you meant by being able to set up a static IP through the router page, but I'm not sure what to enter here. Should I call the belkin people or my ISP? If I get the static IP set up will the port forwarding work correctly?

Again, I can connect to the subsonic server using the web address just fine, but only when I'm connected to the wireless network.

Thanks for the help!!

Yep :D

You have in effect 2 IP addresses the internal IP which would be something like 192.168.0.xx
and an external IP which is set by your ISP and is normally dynamic (eg can change)
canyouseeme.org is reporting your external IP.
Its your internal IP of your server that needs to be static.
If you go to portforward.com and enter your router type they will give you more info on how to that.

OK I have assigned my desktop a static IP by editing /etd/network/interfaces, and ifconfig shows me that my ethernet card has this new address. Also, when I type this address:4040 in a browser I get to the subsonic login page. Now when I go to the router page it shows me that port 4040 and 80 are open for the new ip address I created.

But, my computer shows up in the dhcp client list on the router config page with the old ip that I thought I had changed...And canyouseeme still tells says connection timed out for ports 4040 and 80.

Any ideas?

Try turning off and back on the router, that sometimes clears the cache.
Also make sure the router has both inbound and outbound rules for your port 4040
If its something particular with the Ubuntu OS setup you will have to wait for a user with experience with that OS as I'm a Windoze guy.

I just wanted to mention that I got this problem solved...it turns out I had to change the settings on my MODEM to generate an external IP address. I had everything else correct. I'm wondering if this is a common problem, but I've never seen this issue addressed anywhere....thoughts?

Most people have a router/modem (eg one box) I take it you have a router and a modem.
This may obviously cause a problem for some but I expect it depends on the modem.
However we do rely on the users informing us of their setup.

Oh! HAHA! I'm so ignorant I thought that everyone had a modem which was plugged into a router... sorry.

Your comments were very helpful though.

Thanks!
