Just thought I'd give a heads up to anyone looking for a good deal on storage.

I guess $140 doesn't seem that good since I was seeing regular sales for them around $110 before the flood. I keep shooting myself for thinking I'd just wait until they went below $100 before I pulled the trigger.

Yeah, me too. I bought Samsung F4 2TB drives back then for $69 ea. 35/TB was about as low as I've ever seen. I've got 8 of them in my RAID array.

I also like the WD Red's.

I've had good luck with 7200rpm Seagates in the past and the power savings with the eco-drives doesn't save very much where I live as our electric costs are lower than average. Besides, with 4 servers already running 24/7 the difference isn't going to show up. I'll save more just by sending my daughter back to college and not having to follow her around the house turning off lights behind her - LOL.

I never worry about HDD power consumption. Hell I'm using a old Pentium D processor as my server that isn't exactly great on power management so the HDD's aren't going to make much difference. Right now I just have 3 2TB's but I want to get a pair of 3TB's to replace the single 2TB I'm using for movies right now. I just can't justify paying $300 for it right now

A couple years ago we realized that in order to buy all the toys we wanted to build out our network we had to come up with an idea to pay for it all. That's when my son and I formed our LLC and decided that we would only buy our tech gear from the revenues we generated through the business. That had a double effect of keeping our taxes reasonable by writing off the expenses of buyin all the parts through the corporation.

We then started doing PC repairs, webdesign, and consultations in our spare time and began generating enough to steadily reinvest in new gear. The business doesn't generate enough to live or retire on, but it does pay for parts and hosting fees and other minor expenses and still leave enough for a small profit at the end of the year.

We no longer feel like we are taking from the grocery budget and we get motivated to think of new ways to put a little more in the pot when the opportunity arises.

Best part - I no longer have to listen to my wife whine as all the purchases are paid for out of the business revenue.

Maybe not for everybody, but sure has been an effective strategy for us. Once you get set up, opportunities seem to just come your way. My son just told me that he has been contacted by someone at IBM Canada regarding bios modification. Who knows where that might lead, but having the bios-mods website out there has been a lot of fun and generated all sorts of opportunities and inquiries as well as generating monthly ad revenue.

It's the classic story of making your hobby pay for itself.

Yah I've been pretty much doing the same thing with DSub. I don't make a lot of money by any stretch of the imagination, but it is enough to have some spare change for equipment and such that I wouldn't have been able to really justify otherwise

I would never buy Seagate again. I am constantly replacing them. Granted they have a decent RMA procedure.. I am tired of drive failure with Seagate. Almost all my drives I bought 2 years ago have Re-certified labels on them.

I would never buy Seagate again. I am constantly replacing them. Granted they have a decent RMA procedure.. I am tired of drive failure with Seagate. Almost all my drives I bought 2 years ago have Re-certified labels on them.

If you bought them recertified....
Personally, all my drives are Seagate and I've not had to RMA for a few years. but I've had a similar experience to yours, but with WD drives. It's just the run of your luck, I guess.

I think everyone's experiences are different. I found the 5900 rpm Seagate drives to be losers, but I've always had great luck with their 7200 rpm drives. I've also had a great experience with all of my Samsung F3 and F4 drives. The WD blacks I have are OK but they run louder and hotter than my other drives.

Next I'll probably be looking at 4TB drives as they start to get into the right price range. That should prove interesting.

i wouldn't worry with 2 drives either. my unraid server has 15 of them this days - trust me, you start to think about your powerbill. also, depending on what you store on this drives, the drive speed is usually your least problem (with any halfway modern sata drive). your bottleneck usually is along mb and network speed

IMHO all this seagate vs. wd is crap/ good is a bunch of BS. i use both for many years, the RMA's for both are about the same. i have sg and wd drives running for years without probs, i have sg and wd drives i had to return as DOA or soon after.
usually i put any drive i use/ use in a clients pc to a decent 'stress test' when i get them this days. if they survive that for 48+ hrs, they are good to go (sh*t happens, but rarely).
it is really more what you need in specs for the machine and what is cheaper (not even that anymore really, it seems sg and wd have a nice understanding about keeping prices very equal this days).
so i guess personal pref. + mission based minor differences (like i go with wd for the green drives). failure rate for me, i RMA'd 2 seagates and one wd over the last 5 yrs. that is a unimportant number for each brand.
